Abstract

This paper analyses the characteristics of the rock avalanche partially damming at present the Laguna Atuel at the headwaters of the Atuel River. This chaotic deposit is described sedimentologically, determining different facies associated sectors. Different morphometric parameters (run out, volume, etc.) of this event are estimated. Based on a previous radiocarbon age and the relationship with morainic levels of possible regional Neoglacial advances, a Late Holocene age is inferred for this event. Based on these findings, we postulate the possible genesis of this event linked to the Holocene glaciation of the Andean valleys. Geomorphological pieces of evidence of a violent drainage of this lagoon in the past are also noted, likewise the probable peak discharge in case of abrupt rupture of present river obstruction.
