Abstract

At the eastern-most Andean foreland (65°30'-66°15'W y 27°30'-28°30'S) the Ambato Block mountain shows a NW orientation which differs from the common NE regional strike, at this part of the Pampean Ranges. The present-day morphotectonics configuration of the Ambato Block is due to a Pleistocene synistral shear zone along the major north/south Andean faults. Kinematic macroindicators identified are: second order Riedel fractures, transpressive structure like deformation wedges and pull-apart basins, rotational faults, normal faults, inverse faults and eliptic structures.
