Abstract

An angular unconformity between Paleogene post-rift strata (Salta Group) and the synorogenic Andean record (Payogastilla Group) is described in the northernmost Calchaquí valley. Stratigraphical and structural studies lead to its interpretation as representing a pre-Middle Miocene deformation event which could represent one of the earliest stages in the Central Andean foreland evolution in the southern area of the Eastern Cordillera of north-western Argentina.
