Abstract

The stratigraphy and ichnological record of the Candelaria Formation are herein described and analyzed. This Cambro-Ordovician sequence crop-out in the eastern slope of del Campo Range, northeastern Tucumán. Thick packages of reddish and pinkish bioturbated quartzarenites dominate the sequence early referred as sterile by means of fossils. Arenicolites statheri Bather, Monocraterion isp., Palaeophycus cf. tubularis Hall, Rosselia isp., Skolithos linearis Haldeman, Skolithos magnus Howell and Bergaueria isp. are described within the strata. Outcrops are related to the neighbor sequences outcropping in the Candelaria Range (Salta Province) and other localities in the Eastern Cordillera of Jujuy and Salta. Some aspects dealing with the Cambro-Ordovician age of the quartzarenites are analyzed, as well as the inferred paleogeography is discussed by integrating the data resulting of a detailed field work and the stratigraphical, ichnological and petrological characters.
