Abstract

Recent studies of the geology and volcanic stratigraphy of the Valle del Cura, plus a new radiometric age, led to the recognition of a pyroclastic event of Middle Miocene age that completes the Tertiary volcanic stratigraphy of the region. These rocks are represented by dacitic crystalline tuffs interpreted as distal pyroclastic flows. The scarcity of lithoclasts, their compositional variety, and the presence of amphibol and titanite as minor accesory phases are diagnostic features of these tuffs; included here in the Tambo Formation. As a result of these new data, the Tertiary volcanic history of the Valle del Cura was improved and correlated with the Indio belt, in Chile.
