Abstract

A shallow damaging earthquake on 18 January 2021 at local time 23:46 h (UTC -3) had epicenter in the Precordillera at about 52 km to the SW of San Juan city, Argentina. Using 46 seismic stations, seismic parameters for the source (hypocenter: 31.850°S, 68.936°W, 5.6 km focal depth; magnitude Mw 6.4; seismic moment M0 6.06 x 1018 Nm; maximum Modified Mercalli seismic intensity VII at La Rinconada and Carpintería; focal mechanism strike-slip, SW-NE trending fault with dextral movement and a small reverse component). These results and those preliminary from more than 940 aftershocks (420 with magnitude ML ≥ 25 in 30 days) agree with the activation of a basement structure of the Cuyania terrane beneath the Precordillera Central, without coseismic surface rupture evidence.
